Litter Training Your Bunny
Yes, bunnies can be litter trained — and most pick it up quickly.
Step by Step
The Sweetgrass Method
Pick the right pan: a large shallow box or corner pan works best. Use paper or wood-pellet litter — we use pine pellets (Tractor Supply) — never clumping cat litter.
Put the hay in the box: bunnies like to munch while they go, so a hay rack or a loose handful right at the pan keeps them coming back.
Sweep and relocate: move any droppings and soiled litter into the pan. Their nose does the teaching.
Start small: begin in their enclosure or an x-pen, and expand their space as they succeed.
Reward the wins: a pellet or a leafy green for good visits — and clean accidents with white vinegar to erase the scent.
Stay patient: most bunnies catch on within days to weeks, and spaying or neutering makes habits far more reliable.
Good to Know
Sweetgrass Tips
Accidents happen — clean quietly and skip the scolding; bunnies do not respond to discipline.
Marking may spike in new spaces — shrink their territory and expand it again slowly.
A few droppings outside the pan are often hello notes in a new room, not failures.
Consistency wins — same pan, same spot, same hay, every day.
Our setup: pine pellets (Tractor Supply) with Sweet PDZ for odor control (Tractor Supply), a plastic litter pan liner (Amazon), and pee pads (Amazon).
